In discussing its increased viability as a body of critically lauded literature, it will also discuss its importance. The majority of youth processed through the juvenile court are adjudicated (i.e., declared by a judge to be) delinquent, for most offenses. Approximately 57 percent of adjudicated youth are placed on probation. 5 Approximat youth under the age of 21 are detained or confined in public and private detention centers, group homes, camps, ranches, and other correctional institutions. 6.
Racial Socialization and African American Youth. Racial socialization is the process by which society transmits messages to youth about the significance and meaning of their race and ethnicity and associated values and norms (Hughes, Hagelskamp, Way, & Foust, ; Hughes et al., ; Neblett et al., ).Racial socialization is a strategy for raising healthy children in a society where. Roughly three-fourths of the programs each indicated that they had served African-American youth and/or Caucasian youth. Half of the programs reviewed included Hispanic youth and approximately one third of the programs identified Asian youth among their participants. Native-American youth were involved in about 28% of these programs.
